In the northwest corner of Arizona, in a narrow band north of the Grand Canyon known as the Arizona Strip, the Virgin River slices through layers of limestone and sandstone to form steep walls rising hundreds of feet above the river bottom. For roughly fifteen miles, from a few miles south of the Arizona-Utah border downstream to where the river flows into the Virgin Valley near Littlefield, Arizona, the spectacular Virgin River Gorge parallels Interstate 15. South of the river, lying entirely within Arizona, is the Paiute Wilderness; north of the river, straddling the Arizona-Utah border, is the Beaver Dam Mountains Wilderness. The Beaver Dam Mountains Wilderness sits astride a biological edge between two great North American deserts: the Mohave, synonymous with Joshua trees, and the Great Basin, where several types of sagebrush thrive. Joshua trees, smaller here than in their native habitat, grow mostly on the warmer, south-facing slopes. Sagebrush, preferring the cooler climes of the Great Basin, proliferate on the north-facing slopes. This trail guide covers an area in which there are no maintained trails.
