A rewarding day hike or backpack to a wooded mesa below the South Rim. Wooded mesas are common in the mid to upper reaches of the Inner Canyon, and when viewed from the canyon rims, many of them appear to be inviting destinations. Yet few of these cliff bound “islands” are accessible to hikers. Horseshoe Mesa, perched atop the Redwall limestone halfway between the South Rim and the Colorado River, is one notable exception. Following an ancient Indian route that was skillfully rebuilt by miner Pete Berry in 1892, the Grandview Trail to Horseshoe Mesa combines the rich history of the Grand Canyon mining era with tremendous Inner Canyon scenery.
