Located immediately off the paved road to Twelve-Mile (Bishop Creek) Hot Springs, Lower Oxley Peak Hot Springs is worth a visit on your way to the former. They consist of a collection of hot springs flowing out of travertine mounds on a hillside. The water at one time was diverted into a pool or reservoir of some kind. Today, however, this pool is empty and abandoned, and the water serves a cattle herd. There are no bathing opportunities. The travertine formations are interesting, however, and the hillside provides a nice view of the surrounding countryside. The hot springs are used to provide water for cattle and may be located on private property. Be sure to obey all signs. A high-clearance vehicle is required. Four wheel drive will be needed when wet (roads become very muddy in wet weather). This is not a good place for camping.
