A large hot spring emanating from a small travertine hill, flowing into a small pond. Located adjacent to an abandoned farmstead in an isolated part of northern Nevada. In the dry Reese River Valley country, this hot spring is a short half-hour drive from Battle Mountain or a little more than an hour’s drive from Austin. The area is dotted with abandoned farmsteads, although most of the country is still used for growing alfalfa and raising cattle. Of the several hot spring sources here, the most productive is on a small hillside composed almost entirely of travertine. Hot water emerges from a small pond at approximately 130 degrees F., and is far too hot to bathe in. Its clear water is an appealing turquoise. This water flows down a narrow, travertine-lined creek into a small pond, where it cools to about 100 degrees F. This lower pool has been used for watering cattle, but it can also provide a decent bathing opportunity, particularly when more water is diverted into it.
