The O’Shaughnessy Dam rises 312 feet above the Tuolumne River and extends 910 feet between canyon walls at the west end of Hetch Hetchy Valley. The valley is now submerged beneath the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which covers 1,861 acres of the narrow, rugged canyon with high granite walls. This hike follows a vehicle-restricted road from the top of O’Shaughnessy Dam to the Tuolumne River at the base of the dam, where a roaring spillway feeds the lower river canyon. The trail continues through the deep granite gorge parallel to the river. Watch for rattlesnakes.
