According to lore, Burnt Rancheria Campground was named for a seasonal house that was torched by Native Americans unhappy with the numerous ranchers heading to the Laguna Mountains in the 1800s. Fortunately, the area these days is much more relaxing and serene. The campground is quite popular, yet as you walk along the Desert View Nature Trail, it’s easy to forget that a million people live within an hour’s drive of your location. This trail is somewhat misnamed—only one portion of the trail presents a desert view, and that view is limited by nearby hills. However, it is noteworthy for its panoramas of neighboring canyons and for following a short portion of the 2,550-mile Pacific Crest Trail.
