Like the Paso Nature Trail in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, the self-guided Kwaaymii Interpretive Trail offers excellent insight into the natural history of the region. This trail primarily highlights the Kwaaymii Indians, who inhabited this region hundreds of years ago. These Native Americans passed the winter in the low, warm desert valley to the east, then climbed the steep canyons looking for respite from the harsh summer sun. Evidence of their passage is found throughout San Diego’s mountains; that evidence can be seen along this short trail in the form of morteros (deep holes) and metates (shallow depressions) where Kwaaymii women would grind one of the staples of the tribal diet—acorns from the numerous black oaks found nearby.
