Before tackling one of the longer hikes in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park—or anywhere in San Diego’s mountains, for that matter—plan to take the short stroll around Paso Nature Trail. This short hike briefly descends, then climbs a forested hill. Along the way, interpretive signs describing the variety of trees, wildlife, and sights found within the park will help you get the most out of your visit, though budding wildlife experts will be well served by carrying a flora and fauna guide. Don’t know the difference between a black oak and a California live oak? Jeffrey pine and sugar pine? Manzanita and creosote? Want to learn about the history of the area while stretching your legs? The Paso Nature Trail will answer these questions, and more. Completing this hike will take only minutes for a swift walker, but to truly enjoy the experience, take the time to understand the ecology of the park. This is mountain lion country; make sure you’re familiar with park tips and regulations regarding this predator.
