Columbine is one of the nicest Forest Service campgrounds in the Nevada system, a wonderful setting for a night's rest after the long drive. Two different routes branch off from a junction just 0.25 mile from the campground, providing an opportunity for an excellent loop that passes through a diverse set of environments. Add in a climb to the summit of Arc Dome, the highest peak in the Toiyabe Range at 11,773 feet, and you have the makings of a fine adventure. The first part of the loop climbs steeply through one of the most luxuriant stream settings in central Nevada; thick stands of aspen fill the Stewart Creek canyon from one side to the other, offering a swath of green in summer and a blaze of gold in autumn. Dropping off the crest, the loop takes you across sagebrush-covered slopes, with more fine views back into the Stewart Creek drainage, and past an expansive meadow before returning to the lush vegetation of the lower canyon. Developed campsites are few and hard to come by away from the lower sections of Stewart Creek, but the scenery won?t disappoint you.
