The Overland Lake Trail is the only practical route for reaching the heart of the Ruby Mountains from the east side. However, an unrelenting 6-mile climb, beginning near the floor of Ruby Valley, is the price to be paid for that access. Gaining over 3000 feet in the process, backpackers must endure the stiff, shadeless climb across open high desert terrain almost all the way to the lake. Overland Lake, with a spectacularly beautiful setting perched just below the crest of the range near the head of Overland Creek canyon, is worth the effort. The picturesque lakeshore offers some of the best camping and fishing in the Ruby Mountains Wilderness. For those who don't have the time to complete the Ruby Crest Trail, a weekend excursion to Overland Lake is a fine alternative.
