The route to the summit of Mt. Rose may be the most popular trail in the state of Nevada. If not, it certainly ranks near the top of the list. The newly constructed parking lot may be full on weekends. A string of cars used to line the shoulder of the Mt. Rose Highway near the old trailhead during the summer, with a corresponding string of hikers spread out along the trail. The attractions are many, including some spectacular views of Lake Tahoe from the summit, a delightful display of wildflowers in the Galena Creek drainage, and the chance to scale the third-highest peak in the Tahoe Basin. The path to Bronco Creek beyond the Mt. Rose junction is the antithesis of the summit route. If hundreds travel up the trail to Mt. Rose on a summer weekend, you may have to wait a decade or more to see that many people on the Bronco Creek Trail. Rather than excellent views from the summit, this trail offers a fine view of the summit, from 2000 feet below. A base camp along Bronco Creek allows lonesome exploration of this little-used corner of the Mt. Rose Wilderness. Whether you?re searching for alpine heights or meadow lowlands, this trip has plenty to offer.
