This interesting cross-country canyon trek has lots to see, from marine fossils to grand mountain vistas. Short canyon narrows, geologic wonders, plant species found only in Death Valley, and moderate bouldering add variety to this long loop in the Funeral Mountains. At the trailhead you’ll find remnants of an old travertine quarry. There is another quarry just over the ridge to the north in a small canyon of red sandstone. The quarries produced building stone for the Furnace Creek Inn. From the parking area, hike east for about 0.4-mile to the end of the travertine ridge on the left. You might find pictographs in this area. At this point the basin becomes wider and seems strangely remote, despite its proximity to busy Furnace Creek. Plants of this Mojave Desert ecosystem include creosote, rabbitbrush, barrel cacti, and sweetbush favored by bighorn sheep. At 1 mile you’ll see a distinctive black rock outcropping on the left. Across to the south a side drainage leads up to an inner basin on the northeast side of Pyramid Peak. Scan the southern skyline for an arch. Schwaub Peak rises to the northeast, uplifted and tilted with almost vertical sedimentary bedding.
