A nearly level trip to the spring that was essential to the Keane Wonder Mine and mill operations. This mining wasteland is also full of wildlife. Heavy bighorn sheep use is evident from the droppings on the damp spring banks. Birds and crickets create a symphony of sound in the desert stillness. The amazing thing about the Keane Wonder Spring hike is its plethora of mine sites. The Keane Wonder Mine was heralded to be the richest gold strike in Death Valley, attracting a multitude of hopeful miners. At its height nearly five hundred prospectors were working in the area. Thus, everywhere you look, there’s another mine mouth with its tailings dripping down the hillside. Mine tunnels like rabbit holes cut through the ridges and disappear into mountainside. Curious children and adults should avoid all mines.
