The focus of this nature trail is on the unique geology of the fascinating rock formations that abound in this area of the park. Informational signs present a sophisticated series of geology lessons, far beyond the simplistic rock identification that usually occurs on such a trail. The trail itself is an adventure in geology as it winds through imaginative boulders to the famed Arch Rock. A side trip from this rock through the slot to the northeast leads to the site of an old cattle tank, which is no longer holding water but has created a habitat for birds and other desert creatures. The geology lesson covers the formation of igneous rock, the origins of White Tank granite, erosion, selective erosion, dikes, and faults. The remainder of your visit in the park will be greatly enhanced by this knowledge. A short nature walk featuring geologic formations and a side trip to an old cattlemen's tank that provides a patch of greenery for wildlife.
