The trail climbs moderately the first 0.6 mile to the ridgetop, opening up panoramic vistas of the Vallecito Mountains to the southeast. It then gradually descends another 0.5 mile to a broad saddle adorned with a heavy mantle of juniper, cholla, and agave. After another 0.4 mile this former jeep trail tops out on a high ridge with an outcrop of sparkling light-colored granite boulders just to the right. This sandy track then levels, climbs, and levels again for another mile. This is a long east-west trail that follows the old Pinyon Ridge jeep trail (closed to vehicular travel), passing by 4,573-foot Mount Wilson to a rocky overlook above Borrego Valley.
