The trail maintains a gentle up-and-down grade through a series of parallel gullies lined with yucca, creosote bush, silver cholla, ocotillo, beavertail cactus, barrel cactus, and brittlebush. Soon the trail reaches the high point at a rocky ridge overlook. Turn left and walk about 30 yards to the overlook, which contains a monument in honor of William L. Kenyon, a noted desert conservationist and district park superintendent from 1947 to 1959. From here the desert spreads out like the pages of a book. Beyond is a seemingly endless series of arroyos (washes) that deposit gravel and silt in deltalike fans, two or more of which are called bajadas. These bajadas support a dense mantle of agave, called mescal. On a clear day the Salton Sea can be seen 30 miles to the east.
