To the American Indians, it was Kalawpa (“a wooded place”), the lofty resting place of the deity Chiningchinish. Early settlers and surveyors named it variously Mount Downey, Trabuco Peak, Temescal Mountain, and Santiago Peak. Finally, mapmakers decided on the name that eventually stuck: Santiago. Today’s bulldozerscraped summit overrun with telecommunications antennae hardly pays sufficient homage to the peak’s historic and scenic values. Witness, for example, this record of its first documented ascent in 1853, by a group of lawmen pursuing horse thieves up a canyon from the east:
