The San Jacinto Mountains, like many other units of the Peninsular Ranges (and much of the Sierra Nevada to the north) have gradually sloping west slopes and more steeply plunging east faces. Hike 53 tackled the desert-facing east slope of San Jacinto range. This route meanders in a far more leisurely fashion up the forested west slope of the San Jacinto Mountains. The comparison to the Sierra Nevada is an apt one: The climb from the yellowpine botanical zone in Idyllwild toward the arctic-alpine zone atop San Jacinto Peak is similar to many trips in the western Sierra Nevada that take hikers up through various forest belts to timberline.
