Prominent from many directions, pyramidshaped Murray Hill offers panoramic views over the Palm Springs area and the Santa Rosa Mountains. It is best climbed on a clear cool day. Its diminutive name belies the fact that Murray Hill is a steep and strenuous hike that challenges and rewards the intrepid explorer. The summit is named for the Scottish rancher, Welwood Murray, who founded the Palm Springs Hotel in 1887 and drew attention to the area as a spa and resort. Murray Hill can be approached from the west, north, or south. This trip describes the western approach via the Garstin and Wild Horse Trails, but you can enjoy a longer loop or a one-way trip in combination with other trails. Many of the trails in this area were built by and named for members of the Desert Riders, an active equestrian group in the Coachella Valley.
