No Southland hiker’s repertoire of experiences is complete without at least one ascent of Mount San Antonio, or Old Baldy. The east approach is the least taxing of the several routes to the summit, but it’s by no means a picnic. You start at 7,800 feet, with virtually no altitude acclimatization, and climb expeditiously to higher than 10,000 feet. Given the easy access, it’s beguilingly easy to come unprepared for high winds or bad weather, which, although fairly rare, may come up suddenly. Ice, if present, can be a serious hazard as well.
