A day hike or short backpack loop through the Tule Mountains. This largely off-trail route runs a circuit around a major ridge in the Tule Mountains, visiting a hidden valley near the Mexican border. The trek begins on a closed jeep road that runs eastward with rectilinear precision across a barren flat. An occasional ocotillo greets the eye weary of desert shrubs, and a granite ridge looms ominously to the south. As low hills gather at the east end of the flat, the trail climbs to an open pass. Look back for a fine panorama of the lava and granite landscape of the Cabeza Prieta Range.
