A day hike from the Mount Lemmon Road to the floor of the Cañada del Oro. The trail begins by climbing over a low hill clad in a mixed forest that includes pines, aspens, spruces, and even subalpine firs. It then drops to a ridgeline and soon reaches a high overlook. The Reef of Rock drops away to the west. Straight ahead lies the broad basin of the Cañada del Oro and the distant Tortillita Range far beyond. A savannah of limber and ponderosa pines cloaks the ridge as it descends; look for fire scars at the base of the tree trunks. Low-intensity fires help to maintain this open forest of pines by weeding out thin-skinned trees and shrubs. The climate gets hotter and drier with decreasing altitude, and the pines ultimately give way to a scrub forest of live oak, manzanita, and yucca.
