An extended trip from Madrona Ranger Station to Manning Camp. The path arcs westward as it climbs, distancing itself from Chiminea Canyon. Watch for barrel cacti, ocotillos, and chollas in the midst of this diverse desert scrub community. The cactus-clad slopes ultimately turn to elevated, sandy flats populated by dense thickets of mesquite. After crossing these broad shelves, the trail climbs again, and the cacti grade into oak-studded grasslands. A waterfall graces a rocky cleft during the wet season; it is visible from a distance as the trail swings back toward Chiminea Canyon. The path turns west again before reaching the edge of the main canyon, and continues its climb on steep slopes.
