A day hike to the summit of Carr Peak. This trail begins at the historic Reef Mine and climbs to the summit of a 9,220-foot peak in the heart of the Huachucas. For most of its length, the trail crosses slopes that burned during the fire of 1977. The route offers one of the easiest ascents of a major peak in southern Arizona. It follows a rocky spur studded with wind-torn conifers to reach the summit. Here, a bald opening offers sweeping views of the tawny basins and hazy ranges in all directions: the Patagonias and Tumacacoris to the west, the Santa Ritas and Whetstones to the north, and the Dragoons and Chiricahuas along the eastern horizon.
