A day hike along an arid ridgetop in the southern Huachucas. These two trails offer day hiking opportunities along a hogback known as “Smuggler’s Ridge,” which runs along the Mexican border in the southern foothills of the Huachucas. A covered ramada stands atop the summit and looks over an impressive panorama of the San Pedro Valley. For visitors who think of the Mexican interior as a desert wasteland, the grassy altiplano stretching south will be a revelation. The distant and solitary tooth of San Jose Peak and the closer mass of Montezuma Peak at the south end of the Huachucas dominate the scene. To the southwest, the great cordillera of the Sierra Madre guards the approaches to the Sea of Cortez.
