This is a day hike or backpack from Turkey Creek to the Chiricahua Crest trail. This trail offers the most direct route from the Turkey Creek basin to Chiricahua Crest. It climbs a bare ridgetop that offers good views in all directions. Because the route has southern exposure and lacks shade, the best time to hike it is early morning before the sun gets high in the sky. There is no water along the trail, and the nearest water source along the Crest trail is upper Cima Creek below Cima Saddle. At the outset, the trail fords Turkey Creek just above its confluence with Ward Creek. The pines of the bottomlands disappear as the trail climbs the toe of Mormon Ridge, which divides the two drainages. Scrubby oaks become the dominant trees as the trail gains elevation, and the sunny understory is dotted with yuccas and agaves. The ascent is steady for the first mile or so, and the rolling ridgetop commands views of the climax coniferous forest that cloaks the north-facing slopes of the Turkey Creek valley.
