A day hike around Johnson Peak. Travelers can look forward to cool pine forests and grassy glades on higher ridges as the trail takes in the high country along a major divide. Gaps in the canopy reveal fine views of Chiricahua Peak and the eroded spires that surround the head of the canyon. These pinnacles rise through the trees like stalagmites brought out of some great cave to dry in the sunlight. In fact, they are the exact opposite—while stalagmites are built by dripping water that deposits limestone, the spires seen here are the result of the erosive subtraction of the surrounding rock.
