Views, views, views, and more views. There is a 360-degree panorama of views from the summit of Mount Carmel, but you had better hurry. Since the fire lookout burned down in the 1950s, the brush has slowly been reclaiming the best viewpoint in the northern Los Padres National Forest. Nowadays, in order to gaze north over the Monterey Peninsula, east across the Carmel Valley to the Sierra de Salinas Range, south over the Santa Lucia Range, or west across the seemingly endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean, you must scramble up a boulder pile or scale a rickety old telephone pole. In another ten years this outstanding view may be gone.
