From redwood groves to grand vistas, this semi-loop along the north rim of Big Basin Redwoods State Park offers excellent scenery and delightful walking. Between the redwood groves and the vistas, the hike passes oddly weathered sandstone formations and a single log house while rambling through a wide variety of ecosystems. In late winter and early spring, add bubbling creeks and a scattering of wildflowers to the list of attractions. The North Rim Trail may be hiked in one day or spread out over a 2-day weekend with an overnight stop at Lane Trail Camp. Backpackers must carry a camp stove (no wood fires are allowed) as well as all water needed for the night.
