Brilliant displays of red, crimson, blue, and gold flowers contrasting with the blue-grays of the peaks that rise straight up from green meadows to the deep blue sky are the first clues of the visual euphoria awaiting those who hike in the McGee Creek Valley. The two destinations listed above are both worth a visit. Steelhead Lake is reached by a side trail off McGee Creek and is a great destination for anyone carrying a fishing pole. The second destination, Big McGee Lake, lies at the base of colorful Red and White Mountain and is fringed with delicate meadows. Expect lots of dust, horse deposits, and very hazardous creek crossings. The lower valley has little shade, so plan an early start to avoid the heat.
