A historic trail providing access to East Clear Creek. The delightful creek runs all year, making the canyon bottom easy to explore. East Clear Creek is much easier to hike than West Clear Creek, although it is still cross-country and requires wading. It is best hiked in warm weather, when the occasional deep pools are irresistible swimming holes instead of chilly obstacles. The Horse Crossing Trail is shown incorrectly on the topographic map. From the trailhead it descends to the south through a fine forest of pine and oak and follows a gentle ridge for the final descent. East Clear Creek drains north from the Mogollon Rim and forms a major barrier to travel on the Coconino Plateau. A number of crossings were established by the early settlers, and some, like Horse Crossing, survive today.
