This hike takes you up a rarely used trail to the Mogollon Rim, with expansive views of the Verde Valley. The Verde Valley (verde means “green” in Spanish) to the west was named by the members of Coronado’s Spanish expedition, which explored Arizona in the early 1540s. After their long, hot journey from Mexico City through the Sonoran desert, the Verde Valley, with its river and several permanent streams, must have been a relief. The valley and the surrounding canyons contain numerous cliff dwellings, pueblos, and other ruins left by the Sinagua people about 900 years ago.
