This is a scenic hike through a historic mining district on Mingus Mountain, with views of Verde Valley and Mogollon Rim. Walk up the jeep road that forks right and climbs steeply (it is shown as a foot trail on the topographic map). The little-used jeep road does a switchback then contours around a basin. This section of the road is very easy, pleasant walking. It crosses a ridge just as it enters another basin. Watch carefully for the cairned but unsigned foot trail that goes up this ridge. This junction is 1.2 miles from Mescal Spring. Although it is possible to reach this point in a high-clearance vehicle, there is no parking. The rocky but well- maintained trail climbs through a fine stand of ponderosa pine and starts switchbacking up the north ridge of Mingus Mountain. The view starts to open up as the trail gains elevation.
