This easy trail goes to the north end of Woodchute Mountain in the Woodchute Wilderness. You’ll have some panoramic views of the western Mogollon Rim and Sycamore Canyon. Hike north for 0.4 mile through ponderosa pine woodland. Notice the large alligator junipers—these are the trees with, appropriately enough, bark that looks like alligator hide. The Woodchute Trail forks right and climbs onto the main crest of the mountain. After crossing several dips in the ridge, it contours into the head of Mescal Gulch and climbs to the south rim of Woodchute Mountain. The trail continues north across the flat summit area, and finally reaches the north rim of the flat-topped mountain, which is our destination.
