A hike near Lower Lake Mary, offering interesting geology, views, and a connection to the Arizona Trail. The first section of the trail follows an old road directly toward the rim of Walnut Canyon, visible ahead. (The trail is not shown on the topographic map.) At the rim it turns left (north) and skirts the edge. The ponderosa pine forest here is open and spacious, and views of Walnut Canyon are only a few steps to the east. At one point, there is an outcrop of volcanic rock on the rim and a massive boulder field.
