A pleasant hike through alpine meadows on San Francisco Mountain and into the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. There’s a good chance of seeing wildlife in this area. This area is closed to motor vehicles to protect the wildlife habitat. The closure seems to be having an effect; I have seen more wildlife, including black bear and Merriam’s elk, since the old road was closed. The trail follows the old road, which has been closed by the USDA Forest Service, through ponderosa pine forest. After about 0.2 mile, the trail enters a meadow and skirts a stock tank. This is a good place to see elk, especially around twilight
