An easy walk along the route of a historic wagon road on Government Prairie. As you cross the wide open reaches of Government Prairie, it’s easy to imagine what it must have been like to cross this scenic but arid country by horse or wagon. The east side of Government Prairie is a good stopping point because the old route merges with an unmaintained road at this point. You can, if you wish, trace the route all the way to Flagstaff. The Beale Road was once part of a major interstate route between Fort Smith, Arkansas, and the Colorado River at Arizona’s western border. It passed just south of San Francisco Mountain to take advantage of the springs found there.
