A hike to the top of Summit Mountain that has great views of the southern Coconino Plateau. From the trailhead, the well-graded trail climbs west above the parking area and then swings south above an old cinder pit. It then switchbacks up the southeast ridge through pleasant ponderosa pine and Gambel oak forest. This forest is open and you’ll get occasional glimpses of the forested plateau. Higher up, there’s a great view of Kendrick Mountain and San Francisco Mountain to the northeast. When the trail emerges onto the summit plateau, it heads west. Shortly, it ends at a viewpoint looking southwest toward Mingus Mountain and the Sierra Prieta near Prescott.
