For a short and easy jaunt through nice desert terrain to some interesting rock art panels, the hike into Hieroglyphic Canyon is hard to beat. Contrary to what early settlers may have believed, these carvings on the rock walls are not hieroglyphics but rather petroglyphs. From the trailhead, the Hieroglyphic Trail climbs easily up a low ridge to the east. There it intersects the western end of the 5.7-mile Lost Goldmine Trail, which traverses the foothills of the Superstition Mountains before reaching Peralta Road.
