Perched high above the Tonto Basin in two protective alcoves, the Lower and Upper Cliff Dwellings in Tonto National Monument offer some of the best preserved glimpses of prehistoric life in Arizona. Constructed by the Salado people, these cliff dwellings have survived quite well, but they are only the tip of the archaeological iceberg in the Tonto Basin. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is accessible to all visitors via a paved 0.5-mile trail, whereas the longer route to the Upper Cliff Dwelling accesses a nice slice of the monument’s backcountry. The hike to the Upper Cliff Dwelling is led by rangers and by reservation only. One tour per day, limited to ?fteen participants, is conducted on weekends and some weekdays from November to April. Phone ahead for a reservation.
