In 1064 a.d. the landscape just east of the San Francisco Peaks changed dramatically. Volcanic eruptions took place, spewing ash and debris across the surrounding plateau, and several cinder cones were formed. Today, one of the largest of these cones is 1000-foot-high Sunset Crater, which is the namesake of a small but fascinating national monument. Hiking up Sunset Crater is off-limits, but you can walk to the top of nearby Lenox Crater.
