At 18,150 acres, the Munds Mountain Wilderness encompasses some interesting terrain southeast of Sedona. The primary landmark here is the area’s 6,825-foot namesake summit, but a number of scenic canyons also highlight the wilderness. Running the length of one of these is the Jacks Canyon Trail. The drainage got its name from Jack Woods, a railroad engineer from Winslow, Arizona, who grazed sheep here in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Except for a .3-mile section that climbs around the upper end of a housing development, the first 2.5 miles of the Jacks Canyon Trail follow an old road up a gently ascending canyon bottom. Plant life along this first stretch includes mostly pinyon pine , juniper, and shrub live oak. At the 2-mile mark the road reaches the jack Canyon Tank where it ends and the route becomes a single-track for the rest of the way. Although it usually contains water, this stock pond is not fit for consumption.
