Denver’s South Broadway business district, most recently dubbed SoBo, was once called Miracle Mile, for how the strip reinvented itself as a commercial hub in the early 1900s. Before that the street was lined with small markets and mansions that were then demolished to make room for multistory buildings that housed department stores, hotels, apartments, and restaurants, all easily reached by the cable cars that had replaced horse transportation and ran down the street. As the area slid into decline in the 1970s, another wave of “renewal” threatened the historic buildings, such as the Mayan Theatre, but in the 1980s the surrounding neighborhood of Victorian homes was designated the Baker Historic District and landmark status was given to other important structures. Businesses began to resettle the area, and it has been rediscovered all over again. Today’s SoBo is a draw for 20-something hipsters with their brand of cool reflected in the shops, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Beyond that audience, there are sophisticated art galleries, independent cinema, and swanky dining options for any age and interest.
