A hike into the Muggins Mountain Wilderness Area through lovely Sonoran desert. At the moment there is no official trail, but the BLM is planning to mark one soon. This relatively small but rugged 7,674-acre wilderness is dominated by Klothos Temple, Muggins Peak, and Long Mountain. Washes snake their way up into and around these peaks, making excellent hiking routes. An uphill, cross-country scramble takes you to the summit. Some signs of old placer mine workings from the late 1800s in the western half of the wilderness lend some historic interest to the hike. Typical Sonoran Desert vegetation covers the area. Along washes may be found blue palo verde, ironwood, mesquite, smoke tree, and bitter condalia. Other species of notable interest are holly-leaved bursage, hoffmanseggia, Wiggins’ cholla, and a red-spined barrel cactus. Wildlife includes chuckwalla, Gila monster, cactus wren, desert bighorn sheep, possibly desert tortoise, and elf owl.
