A hike in the Eagletail Mountains Wilderness through the Sonoran Desert. This trail is named after a well-known Phoenix outdoor writer and covers about 12 miles in all. A nice day hike is to walk in as far as Indian Spring. This is a good area to see wildlife and perhaps evidence of prehistoric cultures. This old jeep trail, now within the Eagletail Mountains Wilderness area and closed to vehicles, meanders gently through impressive Sonoran Desert set against rugged, rocky mountains. After a mile, the trail drops into a wash and heads west. The wash narrows, and the trail climbs steeply out of it. The trail crosses a ridge and drops back into another wash.
