A great hike through gorgeous Sonoran Desert. The trail winds through wonderful Sonoran Desert. Saguaro, ocotillo, palo verde, jojoba, creosote bush, teddybear cholla, and staghorn cholla hug the trail. Take your time, enjoy the views, and before long you will reach Vulture Saddle. There are grand vistas from here, but if you have a little more energy, it’s only another 240-vertical-foot scramble to the summit of Vulture Peak. Look for black-throated sparrows, North America’s only desert bird that does not have to drink water (it gets moisture from metabolizing the carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in the seeds that it eats); delicate silky flycatchers known as phainopeplas that feed on mistletoe berries in the palo verde trees; and Say’s phoebes “hawking” insects out of the air.
