An easy day hike up a desert peak. The trail begins at the end of the road and follows the ridge running southeast to Cherum Peak. This trip is a good introduction to the type of hiking that can be done in the desert ranges of northwestern Arizona. Be sure to carry plenty of water. Along the lower part of the road to the trailhead, you pass through a mixture of Great Basin and Mojave Desert plants. Joshua trees and creosote are two common species characteristic of the Mojave. Many of the smaller shrubs, such as saltbush, sagebrush, and snakeweed, are typical of the Great Basin Desert. The trail passes through pinyon pine woodland and chaparral. Look for manzanita, silk-tassel bush, and scrub oak. From the summit are grand vistas. To the northeast are the Hualapai Valley, the Red Lake Playa, and the Music Mountains. Detrital Valley and the Black Mountains are to the northwest. On a clear day, Mount Charleston near Las Vegas, Nevada, can be seen.
