This hike takes you to the summit of a 9,000-foot peak in the southern Chiricahua Wilderness in the Chiricahua Mountains. The trail climbs north along the North Fork of Rucker Canyon, in pine-oak woodland. After a couple of switchbacks lead out of the canyon, the trail climbs along the east slopes of the canyon, and the grade becomes steeper. You’re hiking through a fine example of a mature ponderosa pine forest. Large trees known as yellow pines predominate, and the forest is open and spacious. You’ll also see Apache pine, which is found only in southeast Arizona, southwest New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Its longer, lighter-colored needles distinguish Apache pine from ponderosa pine.
