A hike to a summit offering excellent views of the cliff-bound Portal area and the eastern portion of the Chiricahua Wilderness in the Chiricahua Mountains. You’ll be climbing Silver Peak, the massive mountain west of the trailhead. The actual summit is hidden from the trailhead. A few yards up the trail, an unsigned trail goes to the ranger station; turn left here and start up the slope toward the west. This slope appears to be gentle, but it’s deceiving. The trail actually climbs 700 feet to reach the base of the mountain. This is a good goal for those desiring an easy hike, as it offers good views of the Portal area.
