An easy hike to one of the highest viewpoints in the Chiricahua National Monument. This well-maintained easy trail takes you to the old fire lookout built by the Civilian Conservation Corps atop Sugarloaf Mountain, where you have great views of the monument’s renowned fractured and sculpted volcanic rhyolite formations. The plant life is equally intriguing. Seven varieties of oak, as well as pine, cypress, fir, and juniper, grow in the monument. Mixed in with the woodlands are yuccas, agave, and sotol. Javelina and white-tailed deer are common. Many birds breed in or migrate through the area, including hummingbirds, rose-throated becards, and elegant trogans.
